Iron-On Patch Guide

Details for applying engraved patches using your household iron.

Disclaimer: We test the material we use to make the patches on our own shirts and hats to make sure it performs well, and the instructions we share are based on those results. Because every iron, fabric, and workspace is different — and because each patch is handmade — application results may vary. Please use care when applying your patch. Just Rockin’ Out is not responsible for any damage to garments, patches, or equipment during customer application.

1. Prepare the Apparel Surface

A smooth, dry, flat surface ensures the adhesive bonds evenly.

  • Lay the garment on a hard surface (not an ironing board — too soft)

  • Pre‑iron the area for 5–10 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles

  • Avoid textured fabrics (ribbed knits) unless testing first

2. Position the Patch

Correct placement prevents shifting when heat is applied.

  • Peel off the adhesive backing

  • Lightly stick the patch in place — the adhesive is tacky

  • Ensure the patch is fully flat with no lifted edges

3. Set the Iron Temperature

Adhesive activates at medium heat similar to 285°F.

  • Set iron to Medium or Polyester setting (≈ 285°F)

  • Disable steam completely

  • Let the iron preheat for at least 2 minutes

4. Apply Heat and Pressure

Steady pressure activates the adhesive without scorching the leatherette.

  • Place a Teflon sheet or parchment paper over the patch

  • Press the iron down firmly for 10–15 seconds

  • Do not slide the iron — sliding can shift the patch

  • Lift, then press again for 5–10 seconds if edges need more bonding

5. Cool Under Weight

Cooling under pressure prevents curling and sets the adhesive.

  • Immediately place a flat heavy object (book, steel plate, etc.) on top

  • Allow to cool for 1–2 minutes

  • Check edges; re‑press for 5 seconds if needed

6. Test Bond Strength

Ensures the patch is secure before wearing.

  • Tug gently at the edges — they should not lift

  • If lifting occurs, reheat for 5–8 seconds and cool under weight again

7. Care Instructions

We recommend hand-washing and air-drying your item.
