You can choose Big Mottled for larger, bold patches of color, or Mottled for a more dotted, speckled look. Because every shirt is dyed by hand, the spots will fall differently each time — that’s part of the charm.

You’re selecting the colors you love, and we’ll tie‑dye your shirt to match that look — but it won’t be an exact replica of the photo. Variations are part of the charm of handmade tie‑dye work, ensuring every shirt has its own one‑of‑a‑kind character.
Mottled Design: Mottled shirts are created by scrunching the fabric and applying dye in free‑hand splotches. There’s no set pattern — just organic spots and splashes of color. Each piece will have its own natural flow and variation.

Saturation: Most of our designs are made with full saturation, meaning the colors will be rich and vibrant with little to no white showing. For Mottled shirts, saturation varies by style:
Big Mottled can be nearly full saturation
Mottled is usually more partial, leaving more white space.
If you prefer more (or less) white in your shirt, just let us know when you list your colors. (If you choose red and blue and want a red‑white‑and‑blue look, please specify partial saturation.)
Captain Tie Dye will contact you to confirm your color plan before dyeing your shirt, ensuring your custom piece turns out exactly the way you imagine.
